엔터테인먼트 산업의 글로벌화에 대응하여 세계 작가단체들의 집단행동, 상호 지원, 국제적인 공조를 통해 전세계 영화 및 방송 작가들의 권익을 향상시키기 위해 1986년에 설립되었습니다. IAWG의 회원단체들은 5만 명의 작가들을 대리하여 단체협상, 표준계약서, 크레딧 분쟁, 대정부 로비를 진행하며, 영상물 제작 프로세스의 첫 번째 창작자로서 작가의 필수적인 역할을 명확히 인식시키고자 노력하고 있습니다.

영어권의 조합들에서 출발한 IAWG는 현재 프랑스 작가조합, 뉴질랜드 작가조합, 인도 작가협회, 이스라엘 작가조합, 퀘벡주 라디오 방송 영화 작가조합, 미국동부 작가조합, 미국서부 작가조합, 캐나다 작가조합, 영국 작가조합, 독일 작가조합, 아일랜드 작가조합, 남아공 작가조합의 정회원이 가입되어 있습니다.

IAWG는 신생 조합들에게 재무적, 전문적, 연대적 지원을 통해 이끌어주고, 그들이 더욱 안정화된 단체들과의 협력관계를 형성하도록 돕습니다. IAWG는 매년 총회를 통해 협상전략, 기술의 진보, 법제화, 저작권신탁관리업체의 업무, 저작권법에 대한 정보를 교환하는데 주력하고 있습니다. 작가의 고통이란 범세계적인 현상임을 깨닫는 것 자체가 국제적 연대의 중요성을 더욱 공고하게 해줍니다.

IAWG의 가장 중요한 활동 중 하나는 2007년 11월 미국작가조합이 다국적 미디어 재벌들을 상대로 파업을 결행했을 때 ‘국제적 연대의 날’을 조직하여 파업을 지지했던 일입니다. 호주, 아일랜드, 뉴질랜드, 영국, 캐나다, 영국, 멕시코, 프랑스의 작가들이 함께 시위를 벌였습니다.

“그들의 투쟁이 우리의 투쟁이다!” 라고 캐나다 작가조합의 대표 레베카 쉐스터는 외치면서 말했습니다. “전세계 작가들은 인터넷을 통해 발생하는 매출에서 공정한 지분을 받을 권리를 갖고 있다. 그것이 바로 우리의 미국인 동료들이 쟁취하고자 하는 것이다.”

영국 작가조합 회장 캐서린 웨이는 주장했습니다. “우리 산업의 미래는 뉴미디어로 옮겨갔다. 작가들은 언제나 자신이 만들어낸 창작물로 말미암은 매출에서 조그만 몫이나마 얻어내기 위해 투쟁했어야만 했다. 이번 경우도 마찬가지다.”

아일랜드 공연 영상작가조합의 회장 오드리 오레일리는 첨언했습니다. “우리의 연대는 자신을 존중하는 작가라면 국적과 상관없이 미국의 파업을 위태롭게 하지 않을 것을 보여주는 것이다. 우리 회원의 압도적인 다수는 파업하고 있는 미국 동료들의 일을 차지하지 않기로 하였다. 미국에서 벌어지고 있는 투쟁이 전세계 작가들을 위한 투쟁이기 때문이다.”


The International Affiliation of Writers Guilds (IAWG) was established in 1986 to address the globalization of the entertainment industry and improve the working conditions of professional film and television writers worldwide through collective action, mutual support and common representation internationally. Its member guilds work on behalf of 50,000 writers in the areas of collective bargaining, standard contracts, credit disputes, government lobbying, and the promotion of the essential role of the writer as first creator in the filmmaking process.

Originally formed by guilds from English-speaking countries, today the IAWG includes members from La Guilde Française des Scénaristes (France), the New Zealand Writers Guild, the Screenwriters Association (India) the Scriptwriters Guild of Israel, the Société des auteurs de radio, télévision et cinéma (Québec), the Writers Guild of America East, the Writers Guild of America West, the Writers Guild of Canada, the Writers Guild of Great Britain, Verband Deutscher Drehbuchautoren (the Writers Guild of Germany), and the Writers Guild of Ireland and Writers Guild of South Africa.

Through financial, professional, and collegial support, the IAWG plays a mentoring role in assisting emerging guilds in their development and helps to build professional working relationships among more established organizations. Its annual general meetings focus on the exchange of information on bargaining strategies, developments in technology, legislation, the work of collecting societies, and copyright law. The realization that writers’ struggles are universal in nature is in itself empowering.

In what proved to be its most significant action, in November, 2007, the IAWG co-ordinated an International Day of Solidarity in support of the WGA strike against multi-national media conglomerates. Writers demonstrated in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, English and French Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico and France.

“Their fight is our fight,” asserted Rebecca Schechter, President of the Writers Guild of Canada. “Screenwriters around the world are entitled to receive their fair share of revenues from the internet, and that is what our American colleagues are fighting for.”

Katharine Way, Chair, Writers Guild of Great Britain, argued that “The future of our industry is shifting toward new media. Writers have always had to fight for a small share of the revenues generated from their work and this case is no different.”

Audrey O'Reilly, Chair, Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Guild, added that “Our solidarity means that no self-respecting screenwriter in any country will undermine the US strike. The overwhelming majority of our members will never take work from striking American colleagues because the fight now taking place in the US is a fight for screenwriters across the globe.”
